As I continue on this journey as a worship leader, I am realizing one critical element that many overlook—a continually learning heart and attitude. Many desire to sing, yet worship is more than a song. Many strive to play musical instruments skillfully, yet true worship goes beyond performance. Only when we commit to learning can we begin to ground ourselves as true worshipers.
Learning about worship can take different forms:
- Reading – Intentionally acquire knowledge about true worship by reading the Word of God, studying books and materials, and learning from fellow worshipers and seasoned ministers who have gone before you.
- Watching and learning – Identify someone whose character and walk with God are consistent and traceable. Offer yourself to learn from their example and discover what has sustained them in ministry.
- Sitting under instruction – Prayerfully seek a mentor who can guide you in alignment with God’s purposes for your life. Allow the Lord to lead you to the right person.
- Listening – Be sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. As Scripture says: “For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11, NIV). We miss much when we fail to heed His instructions. Learn His voice and pursue it, for He knows the heart of God and the steps that will please Him.
All these practices point to one thing—learning and seeking wisdom. When was the last time you engaged in any of these? If not recently, why not start today? The Word of God reminds us that there is great safety in the multitude of counsel.May the Lord grant us grace to learn. Never underestimate the impact that a learning heart brings to your ministry and, ultimately, to your worship experience.
